Universities of the third age form a specific part of life-long learning. Their basic characteristics is the fact that they provide education to elderly people (people over 60 or entitled to retirement, early retirement or disability pension). The education is on the highest possible, i.e. university (college), level which makes it different from other forms of awareness-raising and educational activities, although also oriented on this population. Learning at the university of the third age is exclusively characterised by personal development, not professional training, and thus does not constitute an entitlement for a university degree.
